Finding it hard to shift the tyre around your waist?
Sometimes, shedding the pounds takes more than healthy eating and exercise.
Diet expert Terri-Ann Nunns, founder of Terri-Ann’s Diet Plans, revealed the three factors that could be impacting your weight loss journey.
Here are her words of advice.
If you’re feeling anxious or stressed, you may experience weight gain.
Terri-Ann said: “This can cause body fat around your middle.
“Exposure to cortisol, a hormone produced in response to stress, has been found by several studies to lead to an accumulation of fat around the stomach area.”
Stress also encourages comfort eating, which is another reason you may pile on the pounds when you’re feeling under the weather.
The NHS adds: “It can be easy to reach for a sugary pick-me-up when stressed.
“Do this often and you may put on weight.”
If you want your tum to look flat, it’s best to eat foods that bloat you in moderation.
Fizzy drinks, processed meats and sugary treats can cause your belly to swell up.
To prevent this happening, cut back on these foods and drink plenty of still water to keep your metabolism pumping.
Terri-Ann explained: “Bloating foods could be making your stomach appear larger than it actually is.
“Drinking lots of water, doing exercise and ensuring you’re eating a diet filled with foods rich in fibre such as whole grains, fruit and vegetables can help avoid constipation and stomach problems, which often lead to excess stomach bloating.”
If you’re going through menopause, you may notice your waistline expanding.
As oestrogen levels decline during the change, the amount of Aldh1a3 may rise, making menopausal women more likely to gain visceral fat.
Terri-Ann added: “As we age our metabolism slows down and our total body fat percentage starts to increase as a result.
“Body fat distribution also changes with age, which could unfortunately mean more weight around your tummy area.”
