(WRDW/WAGT) — A new summer course could make your teen the next big master chef or just land them their first job. All it takes is six lessons to make kids experts in teen cuisine.
Diana Richardson says no one is ever too young to care about health. She’s part of Clemson’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, offering the course.
“Teenagers will learn about nutrition fact labels, how to measure food properly wet or dry ingredients. They will learn knife safety, and will learn to prepare easy snacks at home,” said Richardson.
The lessons are designed to educate kids, teens, and even adults. But this particular course is for those in grades six through twelve.
“It’s important because they are learning nutrition skills for life. If they can learn this young they can carry these skills, nutrition and cooking skills, through life. When they are out on their own they will be able to cook for themselves or their family.”
Not only does the course help teens learn to whip it up in the kitchen, but it also targets obesity rates, which have tripled in South Carolina over the last twenty years.
“They’re learning nutrition and how to properly care for their bodies at a young age which can prevent some heart disease, diabetes, things of that nature,” said Richardson.
If that’s not enough, the six-week course could have your teen rolling in the dough.
“Some teenagers use this certificate to get a job in the food industry, for instance, McDonald’s or Burger King. This is just kind of a step to help them get a summer job or after school job.
The Teen Cuisine course starts June 11th at Leslie B. Price Senior and Youth Center, in Aiken. Lessons start at 10:00 a.m. and it’s free to participate.
