With the days getting longer and summer fast approaching, the thought of squeezing back into the summer wardrobe can be daunting for many.
For those who are overweight and want to shift a few pounds, following a structured diet plan can be the easiest way to help them stay on track.
A quick search online will bring up lots of different diet plans, and the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting are among the most popular diets on offer.
Celebrity personal trainer and co-founder of online fitness platform, Results with Lucy, Cecilia Harris, opened up to Express.co.uk about how effective these diets actually are and what is the best diet for weight loss.
The ketogenic diet involves eating high-fat high-protein foods and cutting down on the amount of carbs.
By eating less than 25g of net carbs a day, many dieters have slimmed down on this plan, and research showed slimmers can lose as much as 10lb in one week.
But this lifestyle is not suitable for everyone and could in fact be dangerous for some people, Cecilia revealed.
“Some of us could not live on a keto diet and would actually get ill because it’s high-fat and high-protein diet,” Cecilia said.
“Some people thrive on that diet. I can’t say it’s not one to do, because it works for some.
“Diets like the keto diet are a good kick-start to a lifestyle that we embrace but are not sustainable all year round.
“It’s ok to try something for a certain amount of time and get results and be happy with that then carry on.”
Intermittent fasting is another popular diet that slimmers use to try and shift the pounds.
There are different forms of this which include the 5:2 diet, where dieters only eat 500 calories two days a week and eat normally for the rest of the week.
For some, they practice intermittent fasting by eating all meals within an eight hour window of the day, and fast for the remaining 16-hours.
Many fasters opt to eat between 12pm and 8pm and will often not eat for hours after waking up.
“I know this can work for some people, but it’s not for everyone,” Cecilia explained.
“That’s fine, there’s no rule that you have to eat at a certain time.
“There is no evidence-based research that eating breakfast will be better for you and help you lose weight.
If you eat breakfast or if you don’t eat breakfast, I’ve done the research and there is no one rule for everyone.
“If you can’t eat breakfast then don’t eat it. What I will say is eat enough energy for yourself and for your body.”
So what is the best diet to follow when trying to slim down the waistline?
When choosing a diet to follow, Cecilia explained there is no one diet that works for everyone, and eating enough food and nutrients is best thing dieters can do.
She said: “As long as you are getting the right nutrients from the food on your plate, that is the most important thing.”
One TV star who recently lost weight explained how this transformation changed her.
Comedian and actress Emily Atack lost half a stone during her stint on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!.
She lost half a stone while living on a diet of rice and beans for three weeks on the show.
After losing the weight, she was given a boost of confidence and decided to stop editing photos of herself she posted online in order to appear slimmer.
