Senior living communities make sure residents eat healthy foods for winter nourishment – Chron.com

It’s been cold outside, and according to forecasts, Houston is going to see more cold weather, maybe even through the first part of March.

So, as Houston has these days and nights of chilly and cold weather, there are foods that can help regulate your body temperature, and help you stay warm. Moreover, according to the “Eat This, Not That” website, https://www.eatthis.com, the foods mentioned below are backed by scientific data.


Plus, there are other foods that may help you not just during the winter, but throughout the year.

For example, if you have cold hands and feet, you may have an iron deficiency. Even if people get enough iron, their bodies may not be able to absorb it. But if you are not eating enough iron-laden foods, consider adding lean beef, poultry and pork tenderloin that are low in saturated fats, that also can help warm you up.


Lots of other foods that are plant-based have iron, but our bodies absorb more iron from meats than any other source. Moreover, eating iron-rich foods along with foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, tangerines, cantaloupes, strawberries, tomatoes and dark green vegetables will increase the amount of iron your body absorbs.

At the Hallmark, a senior living community, new executive chef Mark Simotas, who has more than 40 years of experience, suggests seasonal items such as butternut squash, kale, fresh greens, and proteins are a must at every meal.

“Hardy stews and soups, or seasonal vegetable soups, help provide sustainable energy, and will help keep you warm in the winter,” Simotas said.

He also recommends blackberries and raspberries to help keep the flu at bay as they fortify the immune system.

“Even though our menu at the Hallmark is healthy, we do often add comfort foods such as Shepherd’s Pie, hearty winter chili, and Seafood Newburg, that are served with a balanced meal,” Simotas said.


Hearty stews and soups are favorites throughout Texas in the winter, and there are thousands of recipes. “We also serve homemade soups with fresh vegetables each day, which gives residents the nutrients they need to stay healthy. We offer two different soups daily, so residents have a variety to pick from. They are very popular during the winter months.”
