But a type of Irish honey, which is much cheaper, may be just as good for us, according to new research.

Researchers from Dublin City University and Trinity College Dublin concluded that Irish honey contains just as many powerful antioxidants, which help to prevent damage occurring in the cells of the body, as manuka honey.

The researchers analysed 131 honey samples from beekeepers across Ireland. The samples were a mix of multi-floral honeys. ivy honeys, oilseed rape honeys and heather honeys.

Irish heather honey was found to have the most antioxidants, even more than Manuka honey, which is produced in New Zealand by bees that pollinate the country’s native Manuka bush.

They also found that found that multi-floral honeys produced by urban bees with access to a wide range of flowers contained more antioxidants than honey produced by bees in rural areas, where they may be less flower diversity.

The only downside is that this honey isn’t as easy to come by, unlike manuka.
