Health Division offers tips to prevent heart disease, leading cause of death in Oakland County

Nearly 11,000 Oakland County residents died from heart disease from 2012 to 2015.

In 2015, 2,849 residents over the age of 19 died from heart disease, which is the leading cause of death among county residents, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Heart disease accounted for about 181 deaths per 100,000 residents and 27 percent of all deaths that year.

Statewide, from 1980-2015, 974,108 people died from heart disease. Thisincludes 101,859 county residents.

During American Heart Month, the county health division is offering tips on how to prevent the deadly disease.


“Heart disease can happen at any age but it can be reversed,” said Leigh-Anne Stafford, the county’s health division officer. “Small lifestyle changes today can be the start of a heart healthy future. By living a healthy lifestyle, you lower your risk for heart disease and heart attack.

Of the 153,039 county residents discharged from hospitals in 2015, 14,498 were diagnosed with heart disease.

Here are some useful tips to prevent heart disease:

• Quit smoking and using other forms of tobacco

• Eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables and fewer processed foods

• Maintain a healthy weight

• Exercise

• Manage stress
